embroidered linen imported from Egypt (verse 7). She was covered with the
blue and purple fabric of Elishah (verse 7). Skilled oarsmen from Sidon and
Arvad sailed her through the seas (verse 8). She was piloted by her wise
men (verse 9). The wise men and elders of Gebal caulked her seams (verse
9). Soldiers and skilled warriors from Persia, Lydia, and Put guarded her
and bravely adorned her with shields and helmets commemorating her
many conquests (verse 10). Men of Arvad and Helech guarded her walls
(verse 11). What a great city she was. She had the best of everything. She
lacked nothing.
Tyre traded with all the nations around her. Verses 12-24 give us a list of her
trading partners. From Tarshish she obtained her wealth of silver, iron, tin,
and lead (verse 12). She bartered with Greece, Tubal, and Meshech for
slaves and bronze (verse 13). From the house of Togarmah, she obtained
work horses, war horses, and mules (verse 14). For services rendered,
Rhodes supplied her with ivory tusks and ebony (verse 15). In return for her
wares, Aram (Syria) gave her emeralds, purple fabric, embroidered work,
fine linen, corals, and rubies (verse 16). Judah and Israel traded wheat,
millet, honey, oil, and balm with her (verse 17). Damascus provided her
with wine and wool (verse 18). Dan and Greece paid for their supplies with
iron, cassia, and cane (calamus). Dedan was her source of saddlecloth for
riding (verse 20). Arabia and Kedar traded her for lambs, rams, and goats
(verse 21). Sheba and Raamah furnished her with precious stones, spices,
and gold (verse 22). Haran, Canneh, Eden, Sheba, Asshur and Kilmad
outfitted her with garments, blue fabric, embroidered work, and
multicolored rugs with knotted cords. Tyre was the place to go if you were
looking for something to buy. Here you could have a choice of the finest
wares available anywhere in the world. She was one of the most important
commercial centres of her day.
Materially speaking, she was a very prosperous nation. Her goods were
being carried to the far corners of the globe by ships from Tarshish (verse
25). She was a wealthy and glorious nation (verse 25). With all this wealth
and prosperity, you would have thought that her future would have been
secure. What could bring her down now? There seemed to be no end to her
prosperity and influence. Her downfall would cause world-wide economic
chaos.
